To understand the origins, development and impact of the mass women’s movement of the 1960s and 1970s, this section briefly outlines the development of the earlier women’s movement of the late 19th and earlier 20th centuries. We also trace the development of the labor movement and socialist movement and their role in these struggles. Finally we outline the economic changes in the postwar period as well as other social upheavals that created the conditions for the revolt of women that shook America.
