Join International Protests at Brazilian Embassies on Friday 13 June

The MTST (Roofless Workers’ Movement), which represents thousands of homeless workers in struggle for the right to housing, is calling on the workers movement and left internationally to mobilize international solidarity with the “People’s World Cup” occupation. This occupation of unused land in Itaquera, São Paulo by 4,000 homeless families is under threat of eviction as the World Cup opening approaches.

On 4 June, 25,000 attended a solidarity protest with the occupation outside one of the main World Cup stadiums.

LSR (CWI in Brasil) is closely involved with the struggle of the MTST and “People’s World Cup”. We are calling for solidarity pickets at Brazilian embassies and consulates internationally on Friday 13 June.

Hands off “People’s World Cup”

Full support to the families of the “People’s World Cup” occupation in Itaquera, São Paulo.

On the eve of the World Cup, Brazil is convulsed by strikes and demonstrations, legitimate protests spearheaded by the most oppressed and exploited sectors of the population.

Besides the dramatic contrast between the billions of dollars spent on FIFA’s event and huge unmet needs of the Brazilian people in relation to education, health, transport and housing, the World Cup also serves to further degradation of the living conditions of a significant portion of the working class and the people.

It also serves as a pretext for increasing the repressive apparatus of the state and its absolutely abusive practice against the social movements and against the poor in general.

A powerful symbol of this contrast and these attacks is the situation of about four thousand families of homeless workers who occupied a plot of land intended exclusively for speculation within four miles of the new stadium built to host the opening of the World Cup in Itaquera, in the eastern zone of the city of São Paulo.

By occupying this land left unused by their owners for many years, the families organized by Roofless Workers Movement (MTST) are legitimately fighting for their right to housing in a country with a housing deficit of seven million homes.

Most of these families lived in very precarious conditions, victims of exorbitant rent increases and the predatory exploitation of land in recent years, a phenomenon strongly aggravated by the projects related to the World Cup.

The many social struggles underway today in Brazil represent an awakening of the working class and the people who, mainly since the mass mobilizations of June last year, refuse to accept the injustice and humiliation any more.

The occupation “People’s World Cup” in Itaquera is a powerful symbol of the legitimate struggle of the Brazilian people for their rights and cannot be treated as a police case and with repression.

For all this, we consider unacceptable the threat of eviction hanging over the occupation “People’s World Cup”.

We cannot admit that the Brazilian authorities opt for the use of the repressive apparatus to expel families of workers in a land that only now, with the presence of the roofless, is fulfilling its social function.

We express our total solidarity with the families of occupation “People’s World Cup” and the struggle of MTST. We demand from the Brazilian authorities that they meet the demands of the MTST and immediately remove any threat of eviction from the occupied land.

Tirem as mãos da “Copa do Povo”

Todo apoio às famílias da ocupação “Copa do Povo” em Itaquera, São Paulo.

Nas vésperas da Copa do Mundo de futebol, vemos o Brasil convulsionado por greves e movimentos reivindicatórios e de protesto, mobilizações legítimas e protagonizadas pelos setores mais explorados e oprimidos da população.

Além do contraste dramático entre os bilhões de reais gastos com o evento da FIFA e as enormes demandas não atendidas do povo brasileiro em relação à educação, saúde, transporte e moradia, a Copa do Mundo também serve para aprofundar a degradação das condições de vida de uma parcela significativa da classe trabalhadora e do povo.

Serve também como pretexto para um incremento do aparato repressivo do Estado e de sua ação absolutamente abusiva contra os movimentos sociais e contra os pobres de forma geral.

Um poderoso símbolo desse contraste e desses ataques é a situação das cerca de quatro mil famílias de trabalhadores sem teto que ocuparam um terreno antes destinado exclusivamente à especulação imobiliária a menos de quatro quilômetros do novo Estádio construído para sediar a abertura da Copa do Mundo em Itaquera, zona leste da cidade de São Paulo.

Ao ocupar esse terreno deixado sem uso por seus proprietários há muitos anos, as famílias organizadas pelo Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Teto (MTST) lutam legitimamente por seu direito à moradia em um país com um déficit habitacional da ordem de sete milhões de casas.

Grande parte dessas famílias viviam em condições precaríssimas, vítimas do exorbitante aumento dos aluguéis e da valorização predatória dos terrenos nos últimos anos, um fenômeno fortemente agravado pelas obras relacionadas à Copa do Mundo.

As muitas lutas sociais em curso hoje no Brasil representam um despertar da classe trabalhadora e do povo que, principalmente a partir das mobilizações de massas de junho do ano passado, recusam-se a aceitar a injustiça, os desmandos e a humilhação de antes.

A ocupação “Copa do Povo” em Itaquera é um símbolo poderoso da luta legítima do povo brasileiro por seus direitos e não pode ser tratada como caso de polícia e de repressão.

Por tudo isso, entendemos como inaceitável a ameaça de desocupação que paira sobre a ocupação “Copa do Povo”.

Não podemos admitir que as autoridades brasileiras optem pela utilização do aparato repressivo para expulsar famílias de trabalhadores de um terreno que só agora, com sua presença, está cumprindo sua função social.

Manifestamos nossa total solidariedade às famílias da ocupação “Copa do Povo” e à luta do MTST. Exigimos das autoridades brasileiras que atendam as reivindicações do MTST e retirem imediatamente qualquer ameaça de desocupação do terreno ocupado.
