Socialist Alternative Candidates Speak Out Against Obama Surveillance Program

2538

The Socialist Alternative candidates for city council, Kshama Sawant in Seattle, Seamus Whelan in Boston, and Ty Moore in Minneapolis, issued this joint statement on the new revelations about the Obama administration’s secret surveillance program.

Back in 2008, Obama said “Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of my presidency” and that whistleblowing should be looked on as “acts of courage and patriotism… [that] should be encouraged rather than stifled.”

In reality, Glenn Greenwald’s recent exposure further confirms how Obama’s administration has taken Big Brother style invasions of privacy and prosecution of whistleblowers to levels never seen before.

And today, Senator Dianne Feinstein and other top Democratic Party hacks are defending these dangerous policies. We desperately need to break off any illusions of “reforming” or “reclaiming” the Democratic Party. It is thoroughly corrupted and a tool of corporate domination.

We need to build a new mass party, uniting all forces on the left, controlled by and representing working people. Join our local socialist campaigns for City Council to help build a serious political challenge to corporate rule in our cities, nationally, and globally.
