Healthcare for All!

Published on

We live in the richest country in the world, yet 46 million Americans have no health insurance. That’s more than all Americans aged 65 and older (36 million), 8 million more than those living with HIV throughout the world (38 million), and 14 million more than the population of Canada (32 million)!

These numbers are staggering, and they will only increase in the coming years. This exploding number of uninsured is a result of corporations shedding employees’ healthcare coverage, the insurance companies’ insatiable thirst for profits, and the government’s slashing of social programs; while they pour billions into Iraq and cut taxes for the wealthy.

In order to be competitive on the market, corporations have been waging a war on the working class; this war has many fronts (wages, employment, pensions, etc), one being our healthcare coverage.

Corporations have one agenda – profits. Not making cars, shoes, houses, or appliances, but profits. This constant chase after profits leads them inevitably to place our benefits, our wages, and our lives in their crosshairs.

When was the last time one of our bosses had to worry about when, if ever, they were going to be able to go to the doctor for a routine check-up? Or if they would have enough cash to cover little Johnny’s broken arm? I doubt ever.

But we have to fret and worry, daily, about such things. When we can’t go to the doctor or dentist, when we have to consider making cuts in our personal budgets to make room for medical expenses, when our parents and grandparents have to cut pills in half or forgo food to enjoy the benefits of medicine, it is painfully evident a change is needed.

We need to take the pharmaceutical companies, the health insurance companies, and the hospitals into public ownership and run them democratically. We need a healthcare system that works for all people, not one that just makes exorbitant profits for the bosses!
