This summer, Socialist Alternative has conducted an “external appeal” aimed at sympathizers, family, friends, and coworkers rather than our members. As a letter on our website motivating the appeal explains, given the deteriorating economic situation and the escalating attacks on working people, there is a desperate need to build a strong socialist organization in the U.S.
We set a target of raising $5,000, to be applied to achieving our current goals, which include:
Organizing a student walkout against the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN in September.
Organizing a speaking tour for an international speaker from the Middle East this fall, particularly to popularize the ideas of democratic socialism among a new generation of young people.
Improving our website.
At the time of writing, we have raised just over $2,500 or 50% of our target. While progress has been slow in some areas and there are only a few short weeks left until Labor Day, we still feel that with a push the target can be achieved. Northwest Summer Camp Appeal
Congratulations to our Seattle and Tacoma branches, who organized a very successful Northwest Socialist Summer Camp for members and supporters in late July and who raised over $1,700 in their financial appeal. This money will be applied directly to the costs of our fall campus drive nationally, including bringing an international speaker to the U.S.
