This September, Harvard University, the richest university in the world, announced its endowment is now valued at $27 billion.
Despite this, Harvard persists with “reorganization,” which led to over 200 layoffs this summer and is threatening another round of layoffs for this winter.
With no reduction in the workload, those left are forced to pick up the slack and are told there is no possibility for overtime pay. Many Harvard employees work 10 to 20 unpaid hours of overtime a week in fear of layoffs.
The No Layoffs Campaign, which includes Socialist Alternative and other groups, has been effective in calling attention to the layoffs (http://harvardnolayoffs.blogspot.com), receiving local and national press coverage. A continuing series of demonstrations has brought out hundreds against layoffs and for the reinstatement of all laid-off workers.
